These forthcoming frequently asked questions are in no order. When we tell people we're adopting we get all kinds of questions and comments. Now, I know that people sometimes speak before they think, and that sometimes people don't know what to say but they feel like they need to say something anyway. But ya know, sometimes all I want to hear is: "That's great! I'm very happy for you. Keep me in the loop." ... or something like that.
What I don't want to hear is: "Wow, so is Ethiopia the new trendy spot for adoptions?"
Because when I hear that, all I really want to say is: "Yes, ya know, I'm spending tons of money on agency fees and putting myself through an emotional train wreck just so I can be trendy! I mean, who wants a biological child or a baby from China? That's SO yesterday."
But I'm so in shock that I barely manage to mumble something about how great it is that more agencies are approved to facilitate adoptions in Ethiopia now. For those of you who don't know us that well, Tim and I are as far from trendy as you can get. So to ask us that question about anything is pretty insane. But to suggest that we've made a lifelong decision based on one celebrity's actions is outrageous!
As with all of the questions and comments that set me off, I know I need to just let 'em roll because with a blended family we'll no doubt hear them for the rest of our lives. And 99% of the time, folks are not trying to be mean - I know this. But it still stings... just sayin'. - Sarah

Boy I haven't heard that one myself thankfully...but this is for you..."That's great! I'm very happy for you. Keep me in the loop." I will check back.
When we get this question, my husband and I laugh and say, "yes, that's exactly why we're adopting from Ethiopia. In fact, we want to be just like Angelina and Brad." Usually the other person feels kind of dumb and changes the subject. Anyway, we just built a site to document our Ethiopia adoption journey: web.mac.com/careygrange.
