2 months ago we got our referral. Still no word on when we'll be traveling. We did get an update of sorts from our agency today saying that the U.S. Embassy has correct data on us. Read into that what you will.
Last night Tim and I made Amharic flash cards with some key phrases. Considering we've only heard the language spoken a few times I'm sure we're butchering it, but I'm hoping folks will be patient and forgiving.
We also got down to the logistics of packing this weekend. Using an Excel sheet that I got from one of my fave bloggers, we were able to isolate the things we have and the things we don't. And although we've been collecting things for travel for what seems like decades, we still have 50 some items left to buy... everything from a cary on bag that's not too big to Imodium. I see several trips to Target in our future. - Sarah

We got a similar e-mail from Emily yesterday....hopefully there will be a great big group 67 e-mail today!
That's a good sign, your email that is! Keep getting ready!
Can you send me a copy of that list? I have one but would love to compare!!
we have the Lonely Planet Ethiopian Amharic Phrasebook (it's purple). People who have already traveled say it's great and very easy to find what you want to say in it. Also, words/phrases are written phonetically but also in Amharic so if worse comes to worse, you can just point to what you're trying to say :)
Blessings, Emily
PS- do you have a list of "must buys" from Ethiopia?? I've seen several floating out there in internet land. Do you belong to the "big" Ethiopia yahoo group? If yes, search for Gotcha day gift ideas and someone listed nearly 20 things you'll want to buy to have while raising your son. Good luck.
Hi Sarah
Can you send me the excel sheet you mentioned. I am trying to collect all the tips and lists I can get my hands on. I do have a lot of time to get organised but you can never have too many lists in my opinion.
Happy travels.
