Last night Tim and I watched the video that came with our Ergo Carrier. Tim and I looked at each other and at almost the same time said, "I sure hope we don't drop this kid." Seriously, I'm sure once we do it a couple of times it'll be easy, but watching those people in the video made me feel very inflexible and klutzy. It takes a lot of coordination to nestle a baby in there.
But watching it reminded me we also need to get a sling. One of my fave blog pals passed along some sage advice awhile back - pack a sling just in case the baby doesn't like the Ergo.
Buying the Ergo was a no-brainer, but I'm at a loss over the sling. There are SO many different kinds out there. I'm partial to this brand, but don't know anyone who's tried it. Since the ergo is kind of large and unattractive I'm thinking something more stylish and unassuming would be nice. Do you have a favorite? - Sarah

I'm the only one who's ever had this happen I'm sure, but, I would NEVER use one of those carriers in the front position EVER again...
When our Nick was only four months old (and just home from a terrible trauma at the hospital for a WEEK - Kawasaki's disease), I was carrying him in the front position while cleaning etc. so we could be together....
There was some music playing in the background and I was gently dancing with him. Before I knew it I tripped over one of our dogs because I didn't see him! I couldn't see him at all with the baby in the front. My shoes were blocked! We fell straight down, I didn't even have time to extend my arms in front of me and I landed with all of my weight on top of him (baby).
The fear and panic that rushed over me is something I'll live with for my entire life. I thought I had killed him from the impact of me squishing him. It was DREADFUL.... he paused and started whaling... I didn't dare lift him... I called the DR's and within minutes everything was 100% fine (I don't know how that's even possible)!
Whew.... this story is not the norm, but, please, always watch your step with baby in the front!

i love my lucky baby sling...same concept s the hotsling, but cheaper (and I think better fabrics)! we're going to be getting an ergo too. but my fave by far is the moby wrap - thea's fave too. it's a bit complicated at first, but I'd be glad to give you a demo.
stylish and unassuming WOULD be nice - and if you ever find a sling with that description, please let me know!!! :-)
I don't know about hotslings - sorry! But I do have a wrap-style sling as well as a hip sling that I'd be happy to let you borrow!
I have 2 hotslings and I love them. I have one of the cotton ones and a fleece one. The cotton one is especially nice because it folds up into a nice little square.

Take my recommendation with a grain of salt (no babies yet... but here's what I've been told...)
The fleece pouch from Kangaro Korner if fabulous and easy and works really well for infants to toddlers. Happy shopping and let us know what you decide.
